Immunization Requirements

Washington State law requires that all children entering school must show proof of having received required immunizations. Students will not be allowed to attend classes if their immunizations are not current or their immunization status does not meet Washington State Law.

What is the requirement for immunizations for a child entering school?

Immunizations must be up to date prior to the first day of school, for the student to be allowed to start school each fall. The School District needs to know the month, day, and year for each immunization. If you cannot verify the day, use the first of that month. (However, using the first of that month may put your child out of compliance in some cases where the shot was given close to 12 months of age (MMR) or close to his/her 4th birthday for DPT and polio.)

Exemptions--a change in the law: For parents who want to exempt their child from one or more of the required immunizations, the 2011 Legislature recently changed the law regarding steps you will need to take for exemption approval. (The law takes effect July 22, 2011, and applies only to exemptions that parents or guardians claim on or after this date.) As of July 22, 2011, a licensed health care provider must sign a Revised Certificate of Exemption Form for a parent or guardian to exempt their child from school or child care immunization requirements. This signature verifies that the provider gave the parent or guardian information about the benefits and risks of immunization. A parent or guardian can also turn in a signed letter from a health care provider stating the same information. Parents or guardians who demonstrate membership in a church or religious group that does not allow a health care provider to provide medical treatment to a child, must also sign a Certificate of Exemption, but will not be required to obtain a health care provider signature or letter.

NOTE: Students who are susceptible (i.e. those who are not fully immunized) may be excluded from school, by order of the Seattle-King County Health Department, in the event of an outbreak of the disease(s) for which they have not been adequately immunized.
